A smaller tented camp deep in the Serengeti can sometimes feel far more special than a larger conventional hotel, while a lodge may offer facilities that work better for families or travellers who prefer more familiar comforts.

Good to know: When we describe a property as a “tented camp,” don’t automatically picture a small camping tent. Many safari tents include proper beds, private bathrooms, furniture and verandas overlooking the wilderness.

What Does “Tented Camp” Actually Mean?

Forget the little dome tent you might take camping at home. Tanzania’s safari camps can place surprisingly sophisticated rooms beneath canvas.

Depending on the property, your tent may include a full-size bed, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, electricity, furniture and a private veranda. The canvas simply keeps you more connected to the environment outside.

One of the pleasures of staying in a safari camp is discovering that the wilderness continues long after the vehicle has stopped. You may hear insects, birds, distant calls and movement somewhere beyond your room.

In unfenced wildlife areas, camps establish specific procedures for moving around after dark. At many properties, a member of staff will accompany guests between their rooms and communal areas when required.

Always follow the safety instructions provided by your lodge or camp. Wildlife areas are exactly that: wild.

Are tented safari camps comfortable?

They can be extremely comfortable. Many tented camps provide proper beds, private bathrooms, hot water, furniture and dining facilities. Standards vary, so always look at the specific property rather than assuming all tented camps are alike.

Do safari camps have private bathrooms?

Many lodge and tented-camp rooms have private en-suite bathrooms. Simpler camping arrangements may use shared facilities. Your itinerary should clearly identify the accommodation being used.

Will I have electricity at night?

Electricity arrangements vary. Some properties have continuous power, while remote camps may use solar systems or generators and operate electricity during specified periods.

Do safari lodges have Wi-Fi?

Many do, although connection quality varies significantly in remote areas. Safari is one occasion when the wilderness may occasionally win its argument with the internet.

Can animals enter safari camps?
