Northern or Southern Tanzania Safari?

Two sides of Tanzania. In the north, legendary plains, the Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti. In the south, immense wilderness, great rivers and safari country travelled by far fewer vehicles. Discover which journey fits the way you want to experience Tanzania.
North & South

The question isn’t simply where the wildlife is. It’s how you want to experience it.

Tanzania’s northern and southern safari regions offer very different journeys. The north contains some of Africa’s most recognised wildlife landscapes, including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Southern Tanzania unfolds differently. Parks and reserves are enormous, distances are greater, visitor numbers are generally lower and some destinations offer activities beyond the traditional game drive.

Both regions can deliver exceptional wildlife experiences. Your available time, interests, season and preferred safari style should determine which route makes sense.

First thing to know: Northern and southern Tanzania are not usually combined casually by road. Their geography means flights often become important when building a journey across both regions.

01 The North
Northern Tanzania

Tanzania’s Iconic Safari Landscapes

Northern Tanzania contains a remarkable concentration of wildlife destinations connected by a well-established safari route. Landscapes change dramatically as you travel from woodland and baobab country into volcanic highlands and the enormous plains of the Serengeti.

This makes the north particularly flexible for road safaris. A single journey can combine several distinct ecosystems without requiring a flight between every destination.

Serengeti Vast plains, predators and seasonal Great Migration movements.
Ngorongoro Dramatic highlands and wildlife concentrated within the crater ecosystem.
Tarangire Baobab country, elephants and strongly seasonal wildlife patterns.
Lake Manyara A compact landscape of groundwater forest, escarpment and lake environment.
02 The South
Southern Tanzania

Wilder Spaces. Different Rhythm.

Southern Tanzania feels more expansive. Protected areas are enormous, properties are often widely separated and safari itineraries can feel less like a circuit and more like a journey into individual wilderness areas.

The south also introduces different ways of exploring. Depending on the destination and itinerary, traditional game drives can be combined with walking or boat-based wildlife experiences.

Nyerere Vast wilderness shaped by the Rufiji River, with game drives and boat safari possibilities.
Ruaha Remote landscapes, substantial wildlife populations and an unmistakably wild atmosphere.
Mikumi Open landscapes and accessible wildlife within southern Tanzania’s safari network.
Wildlife

Different Landscapes Change the Way You See Wildlife.

Both regions support impressive wildlife. The difference often lies in habitat, seasonality, visitor density and how encounters unfold.

Northern Tanzania

Big Landscapes, Famous Ecosystems

The Serengeti ecosystem is renowned for large concentrations of plains wildlife and predators, while Ngorongoro, Tarangire and other northern destinations add very different habitats within the same journey.

Southern Tanzania

Space Changes the Encounter

Wildlife is spread across immense landscapes. Lower visitor density in many areas can create encounters that feel more solitary, while rivers and woodland introduce a different visual character.

Road or Air?

Geography plays a major role in how northern and southern safaris are designed. The most elegant route is often the one that avoids unnecessary backtracking.

North

Built Naturally for Road Safaris

Arusha provides a practical starting point for road itineraries linking destinations across the northern circuit. Flights can also shorten longer routes.

South

Flying Can Transform the Journey

Because southern protected areas are vast and widely separated, domestic flights can make itineraries much more efficient.

Can You Experience Both?

Yes. With enough time, northern and southern Tanzania can form part of the same journey. The key is treating them as distinct safari regions rather than trying to connect everything by road.

Domestic flights can bridge the distance, allowing a journey to move from Tanzania’s famous northern landscapes into the quieter wilderness of the south.

Which region works well with Zanzibar?
Zanzibar can be combined with either region using appropriate domestic flight connections. The most practical route depends on your safari destination, dates and overall itinerary.
Can I do walking safaris in Tanzania?
Walking experiences are available in selected wildlife areas and under specific operating conditions. Availability depends on the destination and safari arrangement.
