Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most celebrated safari destination, a vast wilderness of open grasslands, acacia-dotted plains, rocky kopjes and river valleys where wildlife still moves according to ancient rhythms. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, often translated as “the place where the land runs on forever,” a fitting description for landscapes that seem to disappear into the horizon.
The Serengeti is best known as the setting for the Great Migration, when immense herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the wider ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. Yet the experience extends far beyond the migration. Lions patrol the plains, cheetahs scan the grasslands, leopards rest among acacia branches and elephants, giraffes, buffalo and countless other species make this one of Africa’s richest wildlife destinations.

More Than Endless Plains
The Great Migration
One of nature’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles unfolds across the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year. Vast herds of wildebeest, accompanied by zebra and gazelle, follow seasonal rains and fresh grazing across the plains. Where you encounter the migration depends on when you travel, making timing an important part of planning your Serengeti safari.
Big Cats & Exceptional Wildlife
The Serengeti is renowned for outstanding predator sightings. Lions are frequently encountered across the plains, while cheetahs favour open grasslands and leopards are often found around river valleys and woodland. Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, hyenas and numerous antelope species add to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.
Beyond the Game Drive
A Serengeti safari can extend beyond traditional game drives. Best Time to Visit the Serengeti
Calving Season
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu region become the focus of the Great Migration as vast herds gather on the short-grass plains. Thousands of wildebeest calves are born during this period, attracting lions, cheetahs and other predators.
Green Season
Seasonal rains transform the plains into lush green landscapes. Visitor numbers are generally lower, the scenery is beautiful and wildlife remains abundant, although heavier rains can occasionally affect road conditions.
Dry Season
The dry season brings excellent general wildlife viewing as vegetation becomes thinner and animals gather around permanent water sources. During parts of this period, migrating herds move through the western and northern Serengeti, with river crossings possible as the migration progresses north.
Short Rains & Returning Herds
The short rains refresh the landscape and begin drawing migrating herds south again. The Serengeti becomes greener while still offering rewarding wildlife viewing and fewer visitors than during some peak-season months.
