Mkomazi National Park

A Quiet Wilderness Beneath the Mountains
Mkomazi National Park lies in northeastern Tanzania, stretching across a striking landscape of dry savannah, acacia woodland and rugged hills beneath the Pare and Usambara Mountains. Far less visited than the famous parks of the Northern Circuit, Mkomazi offers space, beautiful scenery and a distinctly off-the-beaten-track safari experience.
The park forms part of a wider ecosystem extending into Kenya’s Tsavo region, allowing wildlife to move across a vast transboundary landscape. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, eland and numerous antelope species inhabit its plains, alongside predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Mkomazi is particularly important for the conservation of threatened species. Its conservation story includes the black rhinoceros and African wild dog, making the park especially interesting for travellers who want to understand Tanzania’s wildlife protection efforts while exploring a quieter corner of the country.

WHEN TO GO
Best Time to Visit Mkomazi National Park
Warm & Green
The landscape retains some of its seasonal greenery, creating attractive scenery and good conditions for birdwatching. Temperatures can be warm, particularly across the more exposed plains.
Long Rains
Rainfall brings greener vegetation and quieter conditions. Some roads can become more challenging after heavy rain, so travel during this period requires greater flexibility.
Dry Season
Drier conditions and thinning vegetation generally make wildlife easier to locate. Animals increasingly depend on reliable water sources, while clear skies and open landscapes make this an excellent period for exploring the park.
Short Rains
The short rains begin refreshing the dry landscape, bringing new vegetation and increased bird activity. Wildlife remains rewarding, although animals become less concentrated as water becomes more widely available.
Mkomazi is best chosen for its quiet wilderness, conservation story and unusual species rather than sheer concentrations of wildlife. Its location also makes it a useful addition to journeys connecting Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Tanzania’s northeastern regions.
