NORTHERN TANZANIA
Lake Natron
DISCOVER LAKE NATRON
Where Tanzania Feels Truly Untamed
Lake Natron is one of Northern Tanzania’s most unusual destinations, a remote alkaline lake surrounded by volcanic landscapes, open plains and the dramatic escarpments of the Great Rift Valley. Far removed from the classic safari circuit, it offers an experience shaped as much by scenery and adventure as by wildlife.
Rising above the landscape is Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano whose name means “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. Below it, mineral-rich waters, salt flats and wetlands create constantly changing colours across Lake Natron, giving the area an almost otherworldly appearance.
The lake is also internationally important as a breeding area for lesser flamingos in East Africa. Combined with Maasai communities, waterfalls, walking opportunities and dramatic Rift Valley scenery, Lake Natron makes a fascinating addition for travellers wanting to venture beyond Tanzania’s traditional game-drive destinations.

WHEN TO GO
Best Time to Visit Lake Natron
Warm & Dramatic
This is generally a hot period around Lake Natron. The stark landscapes and volcanic scenery remain impressive, although midday temperatures can make walking activities more demanding.
Long Rains
Seasonal rains can make some access roads difficult and travel less predictable. The surrounding landscapes become greener, creating a very different character from the dry, dusty scenery associated with Natron.
Dry Season
Drier conditions generally make access and outdoor exploration easier. Clear landscapes and lower rainfall make this a popular period for combining Lake Natron with Serengeti and other Northern Circuit destinations.
Short Rains
Short rains begin refreshing the surrounding landscape. Conditions can vary from year to year, while the lake and its flamingo populations respond naturally to changing water levels and food availability.
Lake Natron is not a conventional Big Five safari destination. Come here for the landscapes, flamingos, walking, Maasai culture and the extraordinary presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai. It works particularly well as an adventurous extension between Arusha and the northern Serengeti.
