When Should You Go?

Tanzania can be visited throughout much of the year, but wildlife movements, rainfall, visitor numbers and coastal conditions change with the seasons.

Warm conditions, green landscapes and important seasonal wildlife activity in parts of the Serengeti ecosystem.
Apr – May
Long-rain period. Landscapes become lush and visitor numbers are generally lower, although rain can affect some travel plans.
Jun – Oct
Generally drier safari conditions and a popular period for combining mainland wildlife areas with Zanzibar.
Nov – Dec
Short rains can refresh the landscape, often alternating with sunshine rather than continuous rainfall.

How many days do I need for safari and Zanzibar?
Around 10 to 14 days provides much more flexibility for combining a meaningful safari with several days on Zanzibar. Shorter combinations are possible when the safari route is kept focused.
Should I do safari or Zanzibar first?
Either order can work. Finishing with Zanzibar creates a relaxed end to the journey, while starting on the island may make more sense for certain international flight arrangements. The most efficient order depends on your complete route.
Can I fly directly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
Air connections can link Serengeti airstrips with Zanzibar, sometimes directly and sometimes through intermediate stops. Available schedules depend on the date and route.
Is Zanzibar only for beaches?
No. Zanzibar also offers Stone Town, Swahili culture, spice experiences, local communities, historic sites, marine activities and a distinctive food culture.
How many nights should I spend in Zanzibar?
Four to six nights gives many travellers enough time to enjoy the coast without feeling rushed. Longer stays work well when relaxation is an important part of the holiday.
