Dry Season

Drier, cooler conditions make this an excellent period for combining Mafia with a mainland Tanzania safari. Diving, snorkelling and beach time are among the main attractions, subject to daily sea conditions.

Nov – Dec

Whale Shark Season

This period falls within the broader season when whale sharks are commonly encountered around Mafia Island, making marine excursions a major attraction. Exact sightings can never be guaranteed because these are wild animals and their movements depend on natural conditions.

Good to Know

Whale shark season around Mafia generally extends beyond November and December, often from around October into the early months of the following year, with timing varying according to ocean conditions.
