SOUTHERN TANZANIA
Nyerere National Park
DISCOVER NYERERE
Tanzania’s Wild South at Its Most Expansive
Nyerere National Park is one of Tanzania’s great wilderness destinations, offering an altogether different safari experience from the open plains of the Northern Circuit. Its enormous landscapes are shaped by woodland, grasslands, lakes and the Rufiji River, which winds through the wilderness and provides a lifeline for an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and numerous antelope species inhabit the park, while predators including lions and the endangered African wild dog add to its appeal. Around the Rufiji and its interconnected lakes, wildlife gathers along the banks, creating rewarding opportunities to observe animals from both land and water.
The scale and relatively remote character of Nyerere are central to its charm. Safari vehicles are fewer, landscapes feel wonderfully wild, and activities can extend beyond traditional game drives. For travellers seeking a quieter and more adventurous side of Tanzania, Nyerere offers a compelling alternative to the country’s better-known northern parks.

WHEN TO GO
Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park
Nyerere is strongly influenced by its seasonal rainfall. The dry season from June to October is generally the prime period for safari, when wildlife becomes increasingly concentrated around the Rufiji River, lakes and remaining water sources.
Green Season
Warm temperatures and seasonal rains create lush landscapes and excellent conditions for birdlife. Wildlife remains rewarding, although vegetation can become thicker and some areas less accessible.
Long Rains
Heavy rainfall reaches its peak during this period. Some camps may close temporarily and roads can become difficult, making these months less suitable for a conventional Nyerere safari.
Prime Safari Season
Dry conditions gradually draw wildlife towards permanent water sources, particularly the Rufiji River and surrounding lakes. This is generally the best period for game drives and boat safaris, with animals easier to locate as vegetation becomes thinner.
Short Rains
The first rains begin refreshing the dry landscape. The park becomes greener, birdlife flourishes and wildlife viewing can remain very rewarding between periods of rain.
Nyerere is particularly appealing to travellers who want fewer vehicles and a broader range of safari activities. Combining traditional game drives with a boat safari on the Rufiji River gives the destination a character quite different from the Northern Circuit.
